Basic Training Courses

STCW-95

BASIC TRAINING (BST) STCW-95/2010 - Weekday Class - Runs Monday through Friday from 8 AM - 5 PM. (40 Hours) or may be spread out over several weeks as needed for local students.

STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) Basic Safety Training course is the legal minimum requirement for anyone looking for commercial work aboard vessels over 24 metres, and applies to all mariners who wish to sail beyond the U.S. Territorial Boundary Line.

Exams at each class end. Four classes.

Cost: $1275.00.  STCW courses are presented by Midwest STCW, a subsidiary of Chicago Maritime School.

STCW PERSONAL SURVIVAL MIDWEST STCW    

Personal Survival (Classroom): 12-hour course provides training in personal survival techniques at sea. Emphasis is on skills needed to survive in the event of ship abandonment.

COURSE TOPICS:

“Abandon ship” scenarios in classroom and a pool using

  • Life rafts
  • Life jackets
  • Emergency radio equipment

Personal Survival Techniques (12 hours)

Fee: $500.

* Make sure to bring swimsuit and work clothes for pool checkout!

STCW PERSONAL SAFETY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY 

Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (Classroom): This 4-hour training provides seafarers with a better understanding of personal safety and human relationships and how they relate to living and working on-board vessels.

COURSE TOPICS:

  • Group behavior
  • Personal interaction
  • Conflict resolution
  • Fatigue
  • General personal safety

Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (4 hours)

Fee:  $200.

ESCI STANDARD:  ELEMENTARY FIRST AID

Elementary First Aid (Classroom): This 8-hour course providing instruction on applying  immediate basic medical care at the scene of an accident or medical emergency until the arrival of qualified medical personnel. A two-year certification card is provided at successful conclusion of course. This course also meets NMC requirements to obtain your Merchant Mariner Credentials.

  • CPR
  • AED training

Elementary First Aid (8 Hours)

Fee: $200

STCW BASIC FIRE FIGHTING       

Basic Fire Fighting: This two day course consists of classroom lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experience. Day one is classroom-based. On the second day, students will apply what they learned in live fire exercises.

  • Prevention
  • Protective clothing
  • Portable extinguishers
  • Breathing apparatus
  • Fire behavior and attack
  • Foam application
  • Advancing small hose lines

Basic Firefighting (16 hours)

Fee: $565.

This Firefighting course meets these requirements:

Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per STCW Code Section A-VVI . Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting per 46 CFR 11 .302(a)(2) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(2);

Basic Fire Fighting per 46 CFR I 1.20 I (h)(2) [Basic only] and 46 CFR 11.20 I (h)(3);

The fire fighting requirements for a national tankerman endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201(c) (3), 13.30 1(c)(3); 13.401(d) and 13.50 1(c)(3);

Satisfies all associated TASKS from NVIC 08-14, Assessment Guidelines for Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting: 3.2.A, 3.7.A, 3.8.A, 3.8.B, 3.8.C, 3.8.D.
